“If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything!”
Count Rugen, The Princess Bride
It’s all very well living off-grid and recycling at The Chaos Oasis, but it counts for nothing if you are not eating well and that means taking advantage of the fabulous natural foods of Belize. We are blessed with many super foods but possibly none is more powerful than edible gold: turmeric! It’s health benefits are continuously being studied and tested and the more research I do the greater its benefits seem to be.
However there are two more plants that flourish here: black pepper and tumeric’s cousin ginger. These three combined are the holy trio of holistic boosts. A friend who loves turmeric as it helps with her arthritis pointed out that she did not actually like the taste...and an idea was born! Many people are producing turmeric capsules made from extracts and turmeric that is highly inferior to ours!!! So what was I doing??!! I talked to ladies who grow, harvest and dry their turmeric completely organically using traditional methods and the idea to make turmeric capsules was born (and revised when I realized that we / they also grow black pepper and of course ginger). During my turmeric research I found out some startling facts:
Turmeric contains various plant compounds that work together to support your body. Curcumin is the main extract in pills however whole turmeric may have some health benefits not attributed to curcumin alone.
Most turmeric has 2% cucuminoids but Belizean has 7.2%
Curcumin has been shown to reduce inflammation, depression and cholesterol
Curcumin is thought to increase testosterone levels and, as a result, help menopausal women to boost their libido. As the female hormonal system is incredibly complex, results can be gradual.
Turmeric for men has shown to increase blood flow that is suggested, in turn, to help that muscle's virility, and to increase testosterone production to aid with increasing the male sex drive.
Not only is it good for arthritis, but it may also protect your brain as you age. It shows promise in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
Turmeric contains various plant compounds that work together to support your body.
A study that looked at the antifungal activity of turmeric found that all eight of its components, including curcumin, were able to inhibit fungal growth. The study also showed that curdione in turmeric had the best inhibitory effect. However, when combined with the seven other components, its fungal growth inhibition was even stronger.
Therefore, though curcumin alone can reduce fungal growth, you may get a much greater effect by using whole turmeric root.
Likewise, another study found that turmeric was better at suppressing the growth of tumor cells than curcumin alone.
Turmeric is composed of plant compounds that possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities that appear to work better together as a whole root. 6% curcumin content has been shown to reduce inflammation, depression and cholesterol.
THE MIRACLE TRIO
GINGER AND BLACK PEPPER
Black pepper has been found to boost the effect of Turmeric by 2000%! Yes 2,000!
Turmeric and ginger are two complementary ingredients:
Turmeric and ginger have both been used for millennia as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine.
They are traditionally used in anti-inflammatory tonics and foods. The flavors blend well together and both contain compounds known to be anti-inflammatory. However, the active constituents in both are slightly different, which enables the complementary effect of these two delicious herbs together.
Ginger is known for its anti-microbial, warming properties, which aids in digestion and relieving nausea. Overall, this rhizome is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties and for increasing circulation. Ginger is also said to relieve motion sickness and morning sickness due to its properties as a carminative (relieving flatulence) and antispasmodic action.
Though there are numerous compounds in ginger that contribute to these benefits, ketones known as gingerol and gingerol-related compounds really drive the thought behind the touts of anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects.
Pain relief. If you want relief from muscle pull, joint pain, back pain or arthritis pain, then ginger and turmeric must be a part of your daily diet.
